Operating System In order a computer to run, you will need to install an operating system (OS). There are many types of operating systems in use today. The most commonly used ones for PC's are Windows and Linux. Windows is recommended for beginners, but Linux is a very powerful alternative. Depending on which type of OS you want to install, consult the instructions that came with the software.
