The Yaroslavl State historical – architectural museum
The Yaroslavl State historical – architectural museum – reserve takes the special place in the architectural ensemble of the town.
The Yaroslavl State historical –
architectural museum – reserve occupies the territory of the former the Saviour
Transfiguration monastery, which was known from the beginning of the 13-th century. All
the structures of the monastery were wooden primarily. The first stone cathedral had been
incorporated in 1216 by Rostov prince Konstantin Vsevolodovitch. In the further the
importance and riches of the monastery continued to grow, and by the end of the 16-th
century it became one of the largest monasteries in Russia. Instead of the strengthening
of the 16-th century, which were destroyed during the Polish siege, new brick walls and
towers were constructed in 1620-1647. 
The northeastern part of the wall, Uglichskaya and St. Mary’s towers, Water gates were kept from the constructions of the 17-th century and the Sacred gates were kept the structures of the 16-th century. The most part of the fortress walls is restoredas a monument of the Russian architecture of the 16-th – 17-th centuries nowadays. The oldest construction of the monastery among the existed today up to as is the Saviour Transfiguration Cathedral, which was erected in 1506-1516 by the Moscow architects on the place of an ancient cathedral of the beginning of the 13 century. It is a four-crowded temple. There is the burial vault of the Yaroslavl princes and rich Yaroslavl people there. The list of the cathedral was executed per 60 years of the 16 century by the Moscow painters Larion Leontiev Tretyakov and Fyodor Nikitin and Yaroslavs Afanasiy and Dementy Sidorovy.
The ensemble of the Abbot’s room, the refectory chamber and the church of the Gross, which were created in the 16-th –17-th centuries were kept in the south western part of the ensemble is the refectory chamber the beginning of the 16-th century. Its prototype was the facetted chamber of Moscow Kremlin. The east case of the cells (the 17-th century) is very interesting among the other constructions of the monastery. The restoration works have revived this monument of the inhabited architecture of a middle ages. The well-known collector of antiquities A.I.Misin-Pushkin has found out the list of the 16-th century “Word about the shelf of Igor in 1790 an outstanding literary monument of the 16-th century in Saviour Transfiguration monastery.
