The most ancient monument of Uglich remained up to now, is the stone chamber of prince Andrey the Large, constructed in the 80-th years of the XV century. It is a unique sample of Russian civil architecture of second half 15th centuries. the palace was the residence of the Uglich princes and later — tsars's deputies. In 1584 the wife of Ivan the horrible with czarevitch Dmitry settled in the palace there he died, that's why the remained part of the palace received this name of czarevitch Dmitry.
In the 17th century the wooden part of the palace has destroyed. Stone chambers stood deserted, they also were close to the entire destruction. In the 18th century they were even going to disassemble chambers on a brick. Only in the beginning of the last century the palace was partially restored. The significant restoration works were made in 1892, then a wooden porch was attached to the northern wall, executed in the traditions of the Old Russians wooden architecture. In the same years a part of decorative processing of a building was restored.

 

The remained part of the palace represents itself exclusive interest. It is a brick construction, square in the plan. The planes of its walls are cut by the narrow windows. The pediments of a building are decorated with a brick ornament and colour tiles. The upper floor of a building was a throne-room. It represented a chamber without pillars by the area 80 êâ ì — In those times it was an outstanding building achievement .The upper part of walls is decorated with the ornament. To the beginning of the 19th century the ancient frescos were remained on the walls and arches.
The construction testifies about high skill and taste of its founders, who were suggested to belong to the Novgorod stone businesses to the foremen.
