The Assumption Cathedral

Cathedral of the AssumptionChapel-over-the wellIn the 16th century (during the ruling of tsar Ivan IV the Terrible) Trinity-Sergius laurel was enriched a great monument – the Cathedral of the Assumption . In was founded in 1559 (by the initiative of Ivan the Terrible) in honor of the victory of the Russian army and strengthening of the autocratic power. The building of the Cathedral of the Assumption was completed after the death of Ivan the Terrible on 1585. This cathedral is made of bricks. Until 1780 along the west wall there was a stone pervis, under which were buried tsar Boris Godunov and his wife and his son Fyodor killed by the boyars in 1605. When pervis was destroyed the Godunovs ashes were transferred in a special barial-vault.
In 1648 35 masters together with Dmitry Grigoryev decorated the walls of the cathedral with frescoes. In that time there was made a carved iconostasis. The Frescoes in the past had often been repainted during the renovations. Nowadays restorators restored the colourful original of the 17th century.

Near the Cathedral of the Assumption stands a Chapel-over-the well of the 17th century.G
