Ipatyevsky monastery

Ipatyevsky monastery
is the most ancient of the kept ensembles of Kostroma. The first written mention of the
monastery concerns to 1435, some historians consider, that it was founded even in the 17th
years of the 13th century. In the 16th century the Godunovs to which
the monastery served as a tomb, and king Fyodor Ivanovich made the large money
contributions to its treasury, attributed to it earge territories at the ground. In 1613
the monastery became the temporary residence of the Romanovs to be a king.
And further the Romanovs dynasty considered the monastery their family relics, that also
brought it considerable benefits.

The territory of the tower
Ipatyevsky monastery consists of the most ancient part the old city and New city included
in the structure of the monastery in the middle of the 17th century. In the
plan the old city represents almost correct pentagon with general extent of the walls by
little more that 500m.The walls were erected in 1586, but up to us they have reached after
many reorganizations.
Red Squars, Water, Gunpowder and Northwest towers are rising above the walls of the old
city the towers. In the northern wall there are the Catherine gates, built in 1767 on the
accession of the Catherine II. Above the walls of the New city the towers-Southwest, Green
and Northwest tower are rising. Among them the Green tower is the most picturesque it is.
Square in the plan it is finished by tent covered with a Greentill.

Among the structures of the old city in Troyitsky cathedral the main cathedral of the monastery (1650-1652). It is a cubic temple, crowned by a traditional by the five-headed. From three parts the cathedral is surrounded with the two-storeyed gallery and the ladder from the porch, arranged as a summer-house, which is finished by 8-sided tent, leads to the second floor of the gallery. All the walls and arches of the gallery are covered with painting, and the wall, pillars and arches of the cathedral are covered by frescoes. The frescos were executed by Kostroma artists in 1685. One of the sights of the cathedral is the golden iconostasis (1756-1758) the work of the woodcarvers. In the basement of the cathedral is patrimonial tomb of the Godunovs and near the western wall there is 3 tiered party of it. Civil constructions of the monastery are remarkable also. The brotherly case (is located at the northern wall of the monastery, to the west from the Catherine gates) also represents by itself synthesis of constructions of the 16th century the first floor and the 17th century the second floor. Now here the historical department of the museum is placed.

The chambers of the Romanovs are at the western wall. They were put in 16th –17th centuries, and in 1863 were reconstructed by the architect F. Richter. In this building in the beginning of the 18th century. Kitchens, rooms, where kvass was cooked, grain chamber were located, and since 1758 a candle factory. The house of the archbishop is located in the north-east corner of territory .The first floor of it (at the northern wall ) is the remained part of the construction the 16th century and two ton ones are 17th century. The central part of the building at the east walls of the monastery is made by the square church of Hrisanph and Darya, which construction was begun in 1841, and was completed only in 1863. In the territory of the New city there are the building of the former shelter (1721) and transported here from the village Spas-Vegi in 1955 the wooden church of Transformation (1628). This temple the most ancient in the national architecture on designs and lay-out is considered to be the best among kept up to us so called churches of the klets.
