THE TREHUACO
Next from Llaldad , on the southern Big Chiloé Island, there is enchanted lagoon. If some
girl comes next to the lagoon border looking for water and recites some magic conjure,
makes with every verse the lagoon waters go away from the sea like a river. When the
lagoon is dry, appear in her centre El Trehuaco , a beautiful animal like a dark dog with
solid musculature and wonderful strength. When El Trehuaco see the girl run to the lagoon
border for playing a tender love game with her.
When El Trehuaco leaves the girl, gives low howls and makes that water returns to its original position, and after to disappear in the lagoon depth.
The girl watches from the border with melancholy, and like she wake up from a dream she appeas in the gate of her house.
If someone surprises the unusual couple, El Trehuaco disappear in a magical way.
