2 High-Tech Questionnaire

1.What do you feel will be the major technological development in the next 10 years?

My response: It is very difficult to select THE major technological development in the next 10 years. I would first suggest that there will be three major areas of development: 1. Science and Medicine, 2. Communications, and 3. Transportation.

I would think that in Science and Medicine, we will see the elimination of many major diseases including AIDS, most cancers and a huge reduction in heart diseases and birth defects. Much of this change will come about as a result of the mapping of the human genetic code.

As for communications, I see the elimination of most hard-wired communication devices; that is to say, nearly all communication will be wireless. This will include Internet, intranet, extranet and voice communications worldwide. The recent explosion of e-commerce businesses will be pared down to a few major players who survive. Movies, music, television, radio and other media will be vastly different than they are today.

Finally, in the area of transportation, personal vehicles will become much more fuel efficient, or use alternative fuel sources. Public transportation will be much faster and increasingly more reliable than it is even today. Renewable energy sources will become increasingly popular and cost effective. Much higher taxes will be imposed on non-renewable sources such as gasoline and oil

2. Please describe the development and explain why it will be so important.

I believe I have described the three major areas of technological development that I feel will have the biggest impact in the next 10 years. I think these will be important because they will improve the speed at which the world can conduct business, and they will improve the quality of life for most working people. I think it is very important, however, that we do not allow technology to by-pass any segment of our society or of the world, for that matter. In the next decade or two, we will see the elimination of many of the diseases that affect humans today. It is imperative that these developments be shared with all persons in the world, not merely those who can afford them. And it is equally important that as the world grows increasingly smaller and the market place becomes one throughout the planet, we must develop a sense of responsibility toward all persons who share the Earth. No person should ever be hungry when any nation possesses the ability to feed the entire planet, as our nation does.
