Light Speed Bandwidth: Optical NetworkingWritten by: Khang Nguyen
Tired of those
lousy 56K dial-up slow connections to the Internet?
Well, be prepared to be amazed at what the future of bandwidth
for the Internet will be, even cable modems and DSL
won’t be able to compete against this new medium. Companies such
as Lucent Technologies and Bell Labs are developing better optical networks
for the 21st Century of the Internet. In reality optical networks were first seen in the early 1980s with the introduction of the fiber-optic cables. The increase of network quality speed has led many developers to vastly improve the medium. Optical networks will be able to provide higher capacity and reduced costs for new applications such as the Internet, video and multimedia interaction, and advanced digital services. A new optical layer in telecommunications is being developed that will increase network capacity. This will allow service providers to hold more than 40 times the traffic. Consumers will be able to have access to even higher-bandwidth than what is currently available today. With the introduction of higher-bandwidth technology developers maybe able to produce new inventions that will integrate more things to a network, i.e. having your home and its appliances more wired to the information superhighway.
Well, this is good news for people who like high bandwidth on the
Internet. But maybe with
the introduction with new optical network, the Internet may also change.
Think about it, the Internet will be able to hold more content
and media than ever before and more places will probably be more integrated
with cyberspace. “Optical Networking
will be as important to the 21st century as electricity was
to the 20th century.” -Gerry Butters, Group President of Lucent Technologies For
