What is it?

All the tissue we have needs oxygen to live. With vein occlusion, there is a block of blood vessels to the retinal vein which doesn't allow oxygen to travel to the tissue. This leads to hemorrhages in the retina and also glaucoma. If the block affects the macula (central vision), recovery is much more difficult than if the block were to affect a branch vein (peripheral vision).

What causes it?

This condition is thought to be age-related most commonly affecting those over 60 years old. People with diabetes, hypertenstion (high blood-pressure) and cardiovascular disease are more likely to obtain this condition.

Symptoms

  1.   central area of vision impaired (central vein)
  2. peripheral vision is fuzzy or blurred (branch vein)

Treatment

Treating vein occlusion primarily deals with stopping the effects of this condition. One method of treating it is through LASER treatment. Some people have been known to cure themselves and the excess blood gradually dissipates. For this reason, LASER treatment usually is not looked into for a considerable amount of time as doctors would not want to perform unnecessary surgery.
