What
is it?
The vitreous
is a jelly-like substance which holds the retina
in place at the back of the eye. When this vitreous
body pulls the retina away, a tear in the retina usually occurs. This
can lead to flashes and floaters.
If the retinal tissue has been detached for a long period, it is lost
as it cannot regenerate.
What
causes it?
Retinal
detachment has been thought to be age-related and hereditary, while
nearsighted people have
also been linked to this condition. As we age,
the vitreous body in the center of our eye gets smaller
and can pull the retina with it. If it pulls enough to tear, vision
impairment will occur.

Treatment
A doctor
exam is a must to determine the exact problem. Usually, if there is
a problem and is it thought to be a retinal tear, the retina can
be reattached through a quick laster treatment and restored
vision will most likely come back shortly after the treatment. Along
with most other conditions, early detection is absolutely necessary;
the earlier it is caught, the more vision that can be restored.
