What is it?

Millions and millions of people have some form of this condition. This condition limits your clear view to only near objects. Far objects appear blurry and you may have to squint just to see it. People who have nearsightedness (also known as myopia) can have their vision change quite frequently, requiring them to get thicker and thicker glasses each year.

Click the flashlight below to see how a person with myopia has trouble focusing the light all the way to the back of the retina due to the cornea's extra bulging shape.

What causes it?

There are many factors that may cause this condition. Longterm eyestraining, such as watching tv too long or working on computers too long will induce nearsightedness. Other diseases, such as cataracts, AMD, and pinkeye can also cause this. Keep in mind that nearsightedness, or any other blurry vision may be the sign of a more serious disease.

The eyeball may be too long in shape, and because of that, light comes short of its focusing point.

Symptoms

  1.

having to read and watch TV closer

2. squinting to see further

Treatment

Concave glasses and contacts will drastically improve distant viewing by allowing the light to focus all the way to the back of the retina. Concave lenses will bend the light back to normal.

New laser technology, called LASIK, will now allow doctors to reshape the cornea by trimming down the bulge and cure nearsightedness almost permanently.

Click above on the "put glasses on" button to see how glasses will refocus the light to the retina.
