What is it?

This disease forms when the macula, found in the middle of the retina, suffers any damage. The macula is mainly responsible for your center of vision. It helps with detailed tasks such as reading and driving. Damage can result in a complete loss of central vision. Peripheral vision would then have to make up for the central vision loss.

What causes it?

This disease is thought to be age related. Senior citizens are those most likely to acquire macular degeneration. There are two types of macular degeneration you can get: dry and wet. The dry form accounts for 90 percent of this disease. It usually forms in one eye and forces the other eye to take over more of the central vision. The wet form can be a much slower process. It is caused when small blood vessels rupture under the retina.

Symptoms

  1. center of vision becomes distorted and fuzzy

Treatment

Lasers can be used to stop any further growth but there is no treatment for the disease. In some cases, nutrition has been linked to ceasing development of this disease. So far, there are only ways to stop the spread this disease, not cure it.
