What is it?

Have you ever watched someone sleeping and you can still see their eyes? Lag opthalmos is a condition in which the eyelids do not completely shut, which can make the patient wake up with scratchy dry eyes.

What causes it?

This can be caused by an injury to the eye that weakens the nerves and muscles of the eyelids. Other diseases that affect the nervous system or muscles can also trigger this condition, such as paralysis.

Symptoms

  1. Unable to blink completely without effort
2. Waking up with dry, scratchy, irritated eyes

Treatment

Using ointments and eye drops will help soothe the eyes. A patient with lag opthalmos should use medical tape to shut his/her eyes while sleeping to keep the eyes well lubricated and prevent corneal damage.
