Is Your Sight Blurry?

Find out If You Have One of These Common Conditions Above

Did You Know?
Did you know a person who wears glasses or contacts is likely to blink more often than a person who doesn’t?
Yes
No

What is it?

When you cry, some of the tears drain down into your nose. That is why you have a runny nose when you cry. Just before tears seep into the nose, they deposit in what is called the nasolacrimal sac. Dacryocystitis occurs when bacteria make it to this sac causing an infection. In younger kids, the problem is much more common due to undeveloped facial areas but the problem usually clears up itself.

What causes it?

If the tears do not drain correctly, bacteria can often build up resulting in this infection. Much of the time it is difficult to know that this condition is even occurring making it even more severe when it is finally detected.

Symptoms

  1. excess tearing (usually one eye)
2. red eye
3. swollen eye
4. painful eye

Treatment

Because of the hard-to-reach location of the nasolacrimal sac, antibiotics are usually required in order to control the illness. Saline is also sometimes used to free the passageway of any major blocks. The final treatment involves surgery and would only be used if the previous two methods were unsuccessful.
