What is it?

Often hereditary, corneal dystrophy can affect either the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) or the innermost layer (endothelium). The outer layer is in contact with the air and protects against injury and disease. The innermost layer, however, is a bit more demanding. This layer serves as a blockade, but, if broke, cannot heal itself.

What causes it?

Sometimes aging can affect the cornea, but cataract surgery could also worsen the cornea's precision. Damage consists of any abrasions or breaks in the cornea and can lead to viral infections.

Treatment

Medicine and special antibiotics can help treat infections of the cornea. If there is permanent damage, the only cure would be a cornea transplant. This transplant would in fact restore vision significantly and cure the problem.
