What is it?

This form of skin cancer is believed to form near the eye and nose. If found on the eye, the growth usually forms on the lower eyelid. It is not too painful but can result in an eyelid shaping inward or outward. The basal layer, or deepest layer of skin, is thought to be the origin of the cancer, hence the name. In most cases, the cancer appears in light-skinned individuals.

What causes it?

Ultraviolet radiation has been a major link to this cancer. Because fair-skinned people have less melanin in their skin, they absorb more of the harmful radiation and have been shown to be more at risk. The cancer mainly emerges in middle-aged people.

Symptoms

  1. a painless growth on the face or neck (usually with a dip in the center)

Treatment

Although the cancer does not spread in most cases, it is extremely vital that there is early detection. Radiation and surgery are both effective tools that can help remove the growth. To help avoid this cancer, people should avoid excessive sunglight and wear glasses to protect the fragile area around the eye.
