Conjunctiva

What is it?

The conjunctiva is a thin transparent layer that covers the inside of the eyelid and outer eye. Ever had a blood shot eye and looked in the mirror to see yourself quite terrified by what seems like a lot of blood in your eye? Normally, there's a small amount of blood trapped behind it that spreads across the eye to make it look like a lot.

What does it do?

This layer produces mucous that makes the tears wet. Without these glands in the conjunctiva, our tears would be thick.
