Shortage of food

Life under the Japanese administration was terribly difficult one.   There was shortage of water, electricity, gas, food and other basic essentials.  Rubber trees were cut down to grow subsistence crops for the Japanese (mainly tapioca, millet and maize.)

Ration cards were issued by the Japanese to control the supply of rice and other essentials items to the residents.  Each adult was authorized a ration of 8 katis (2.4kg) of rice per month and each child 4 katis.   Later in 1944 rice ration was reduced to 6 katis for the adults.  The shortage of food led the people to grow crops ,especially tapioca, on every available plot if land.   The scarcity of goods also led to sky-rocketing prices and a thriving black market.
