JAPANESE OCCUPATION

ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

The Japanese occupation of Malaya and Singapore lasted for three and a half years.   Yamashita took control and a military government was established with Singapore as the headquarters.  Singapore was renamed "Syonan-to" (light of the south) while Malaya became known as "new malai".   Clocks were put forward by one and a half hours in line with Tokyo time.
