When crossword puzzles
were introduced in book-form in the year 1923, Richard L. Simon
and M. Lincoln Schuster gave birth to a worldwide craze. Themed
competitions and a college course became available, and in 1924,
the "squares" were marketed in a completely different way - newspapers.
