About the milk

The milk is in most cases a remedy. The mother's milk heals white spots deaf ears, the boils and the rash. Regarding to the suckling there are some restrictions:" When she gives her milk to the baby for the first time, the mother mustn't hold the baby in her left arm or to feed him at her left breast. In order not to be spoilt by the evil eye, the baby must be given to suckle from a Gypsy woman. The mother shouldn't have her hair dishevelled when the baby is suckling ,for this one will get scabs in his mouth. When the mother gets back from a long way, she mustn't give milk to her baby until she has squeezed her breast standing on a pliers, otherwise the baby gets sick."
The cow milk is the best-known antidote against poisonings. All the objects, the substances, the plants, the insects and all the helping stuff for magic prove to be helpless without the most precious magic means that is the Word.
A lot of magic practices don't operate without the objects, but there are a few that don't have a certain spell or specific words, using only gestures.
The word is in a relation with the thought People transmit good or bad thoughts. That who emits only good thoughts is the saint. The saint causes for the others a spiritual balance: peace, safety, and happiness.
In Lapus and in the Historical Maramures as well, when a star falls people believe that an unbaptised child died and then the peasant tries to bring him a natural estate, to save him from the danger of becoming a wraith, saying:" Baptize him, Lord, baptize him, if it is a boy-John, if it is a girl-Joanna ", because he believes in the magic power of the word.
The positive word becomes an exorcism. The negative one becomes a doing or a curse. The man sowing his thought he will pick up the action. He sows the action and picks up a habit. Sowing the habit he picks up a character. Sowing a character he picks up a fate.
Among so many temporary things, the thought is a sign of the eternity. The magic practices of all times have worked just because they were supported by the power of the mind. The thought is a universal remedy.  The miracles, the sudden recoverings can be explained by the action of the thought, of the suggestion and self-suggestion. The strong thoughts start the feedback:" The culture of the mind  has a great importance. According to the yoga practitioners the mind is the most powerful known on Earth, but a force meant to serve the good and the mankind.

Of all the foods the onion and the garlic, the salt, the milk, the apple, the beans become magic.
The onion is used at special occasions:" The bride must necessarily weep in the wedding day especially when her hair is being combed. If the tears don't come to her an old woman passes a smashed onion before her eyes to make her weep. The more tears she weeps, the more milk wills the cows give".
Thinking that the peels on the onion eaten by the man deposit in time on his eye ball and weakens his sight, our peasant believes that if he didn't eat the onion together with its peels he would be able to see even the wind.
When a woman doesn't have milk to give to her baby, she takes its dressing and closes into it an onion and a spoon, then goes to a well in three mornings beginning on Tuesday. She pulls up water and drinks it from the spoon saying after each draught:
" I drink water with the spoon
To have milk like a cow".
Then biting three times from the onion she says:
" I bite from the onion
To have milk like hare".
Anyone who throws onion in the fire and eats its peels gets fire eyes. In Lapus all these beliefs are active. In the New Year Eve the onion is cut into 12 parts on which some salt is sprinkled in order to find out the humidity of the following months, or the onion is put in a glass of water. If sod comes up around the onion, it means that the new year will be wealthy, if not it will be poor.
The garlic is the first element of the magic arsenal used against the evil. We saw that it protects the community against wraiths, keeps away the evil spirits and the doings away from house; beats some illnesses especially headaches:" When you have a headache you lubricate your head with garlic and say:
" Holy Mary, You Holy Mother
Let the pain go away
Pass ,bad mind, over my head
Like the blow passes over my head."
The power of the garlic is so big that it can chase away the thunder: "You put some garlic among the straws of the bed to prevent the thunder."
Most amulets contain garlic, this being the most efficient protector.
