Spread the word Creative ideas

Classroom:
Try brightening up the walls of a classroom by using big sheets of white paper and pin it up to the walls. Ask each child to pick a letter of the alphabet and draw and animal starting with that letter. Then paint them in either natural or abstract colours depending on their choice.

Another idea would be to trace the outline of a map onto paper and if any animal appears in the newspaper, find the place it lives and pin the article to the place.

Bookbugs:
Needed are sheets of lightweight card, a pencil, a ruler, scissors, a glass tumbler or cup, 2 different colours of paper, glue, crayons or felt-tip pens.

  1. Cut a rectangular strip about 5 cm x 15 cm out of the card.
  2. Trace the rim of the cup on the remanining card, cut it out and glue to the end of the rectangular strip.
  3. Cover the card in coloured paper and use the crayons or pens to draw bugs in the circular area.

Covering books:
If you have uncovered books, do not waste decorated paper and platic, use old newspaper and shopping bags to create a unique look for books. This also means you can change it as often as you want and it will not cost you anything more.

Papier mâché models:
Needed is either papier mâché paste(3 cups water to 1 cup flour) or wallpaper paste(2 cups white glue to 1 cup water), both are effective, a balloon, vaseline or cooking oil, newspaper(strips), paint and paint-brushes, dried peas, varnish.

  1. Blow balloon up to preferred size and knot it. Smear it with vaseline or oil.
  2. Cover with three or four layers of papier mâché but leave the knot uncovered. leave for 24 hours.
  3. Pop balloon and pull it free, and fill it with enough dried peas to steady it.
  4. Cover hole and leave to dry, paint the object to look like an owl, etc. and varnish.

Observations in nature

Garden in a bottle:
You do not need to grow our own plants in a big garden, try growing a tiny garden in a glass jar or fish bowl. Use the pips of some fruits that you eat at home.

Botany scrapbook:
Use a scrapbook to make your survey. List all the different kinds of plants you can find in an the area you are obserbing. Never pick wild flowers, so make careful drawings of each plant and look up their names in books if you do not know them. As the season changes, you can make notes about what happens to your plants and trees e.g. colour change, different insects that ate the leaves, what animals it attracts and how much it grows.

Travel buddies

For example, one year a class has Milaina a stuffed manatee. They communicated with classes in other countries, formed an itinerary, and then sent Milaina in a box, along with a passport and diary to those classes. It was a way for the students to learn about endangered species and communicate with students from other countries.
