Have you ever wondered what made this page appear on your Web Browser?
What about downloading files from FTP sites? Hopefully, you will find some of the answers in this article that explains in a very general form, how the Internet works. If you would like to go beyond that level of information, please check the links below. So, lets get started. (If you see a word you dont understand, try clicking on it to go to our glossary page for an explanation.) Introduction Before we begin, you need to know that the Internet and the World Wide Web are not the same. The Internet is a network connecting networks of computers with hosts all over the world. The World Wide Web is just another service (and a popular one), which is a collection of linked pages written in HTML. In general, the Internet is a network of millions of computers linked together. There are different types of computers in that network, mainly, the two types are servers and clients. Most home computers are clients (Using TCP/IP for exchanging information), and they are connected to ISPs, which are servers. The ISPs are then connected to other servers around the world using high bandwidth lines like fiber optics. All of the websites are stored on millions of hosts around the world, when youre connecting to a site, youre actually connecting to a computer which that site is stored on. <<BACK NEXT>> Copyright © 2000Team C005753 |
