Strokes

1. Centred Stroke

• Brush held in vertical position
• Create full and round strokes
• The brush can hold water and ink at the same time and show tonal graduations in one stroke

 

 

2. Slanting stroke

• Brush held in slanting position
• Create angular and vigorous strokes
• By lifting, pressing and dragging the bristles, the brush can produce bright and dark, hard and soft, light and heavy effects.

 

 

Cun

Stroke plays a very important role in Chinese painting. Strokes of different thickness and strength are the artistic expression of brush on paper. In depicting various geographical features like tranquil water- side villages, meandering streams, verdant forests, jagged rocks and steep cliffs, many kinds of cun strokes are created:
