This was painted for the artists' friend who was leaving for his job in the courts. Ni Zan said in the inscription that it was " a call of reclusion". He was advising his friend to retire from public life as soon as his contract had expired.
Ni Zan took the horizontal view in his painting, therefore he used a special composition method. He the wide water surface in usual paintings as a stream flowing.

This is a Taoism painting painted for a monk. Ge Zichuann (283 ~ 343 ) is a historical figure. He was ranked as an immortal. This painting shows how his family emigrate southwards to Guangzhou and then to Luofu Shen. The horses at the upper part is their destination. The composition of the painting is similar to the scene of Tao immortals' ascension. The format of the Five Dynasties and Northern Song's landscape paintings was skillfully used. There are many interspace.

On the top- left corner, there is a "ci" called Yu Jia Ao (The pride of fisherman). In Yuan's poems and paintings, fishing was a metaphor of reclusion. The person in the picture is actually an official who is fishing.
