As the society became peaceful, people had more time for enjoyment. Beautiful ladies became popular among figure paintings, especially in the Tang Dynasty. At that time, fat women were considered beautiful. They appeared as a group or in scenes of banquets in the paintings. On the whole, most figure paintings in the Tang dynasty praised the property of the country. Landscape paintings developed into an independent topic as landscape poems appeared.Tiny human figures were added to relieve the gorgeous mountains and forests. Artists were actually trying to show a paradise.

Tang people loved horses. Therefore, some artists painted people riding their horses. The emperor Li Long Ji was so fascinated by horses that he kept 400 000 horses at the same time and asked his imperial artists to paint them. Horse paintings became an individual category in paintings in this period.

There were also paintings of temples, scenes of the capital and small pagodas. Flowers, birds and animals were mixed together in paintings. And the three main categories of Chinese paintings is human figures, landscapes, and flower and birds are basically formed.

During this period, artists observed nature more closely. As the painting skills were improved, human figures were more vivd. They were outlined and then filled with bright colors. Women were fat, showing their wealth and dignity.

There were two of landscape paintings at that time. One was the "Green Landscape", in which rich bluish- green was used. The other type is Li Si Xun's "Golden Landscape", in which the color gold was used to outline the texture of rocks, the shape of mountains, etc. The landscape and human figures are in proportion.

 

Artists

Figure paintings:

Zheng Fa Shi - famous for following the style of Zhang Seng You.

Yan Li Ben - good at calligraphy and painting; The courts called him " Dan Qing Shen Hua", which means that he has prodigious skills in painting.

Zhang Xuan and Zhou Fang -Their paintings were mainly about the lives of the ladies in courts. These ladies were beautiful yet fat. Zhou Fang learnt from the style of Zhang Xuang.

Landscape paintings:

Zhan Zi Qian - People at that time described his landscape paintings as " so near and yet so far". He was able to show the distance well. One of his famous paintings is Spring Tour.

 

Li Si Xun - His paintings are similar to that of Zhan Zi Qian. However, when we observe more carefully, we can see that there are differences in between. Li's skills were more mature.
