Were the use of the atomic bombs necessary on Japan in WW2?
Areas to investigate:
1) Why was the atomic bomb invented?
2) Why was it used? Explain the events leading to the use of the atomic bombs:
rise of Hitler and Germany
rise of Japan
Japan's involvement in China
Japan's conflict with US
Attack on Pearl Harbour, Philippines and other US territories
Fall of Germany (bomb made for Germany: see top secret Document 2)
3) Discuss the effects of the atomic bombs, the magnitude of destruction caused by the atomic bombs. Also, you may include research on what war survivors have to say about the effects of the bombs on them.
5) Consider 4 scenarios:
1st scenario: Both atomic bombs were necessary.
2nd scenario: Both atomic bombs were not necessary.
3rd scenario: The 1st bomb was necessary but the 2nd bomb was not.
4th scenario: The 1st bomb was not necessary but the 2nd bomb was.
6) Analyze in view of the disastrous effects, use the above to see if the use of the atomic bombs were justified.
