Greetings and welcome to our website. This project has been
challenging for us and we have gained an invaluable intellectual experience
from it. At the beginning of this project, we thought religious persecution
was a matter of black and white with a simple definition. We thought
that religious persecution was simply the persecution of a
group because of their religious faith.
However, in the process of our research, we discovered that
there are no simple explanations. In fact, some events categorized as religious
persecution reveal only shades of grey and ambiguities. Sometimes
religious
persecution is clearly an abuse of power as in the case of the Holocaust, where
one specific group was targeted for annihilation. Other times, religious
persecution is more of a struggle between different groups to maintain their
religious or cultural identities which can create religious
conflicts. Our
research suggests a broader definition of religious persecution is required.
Thus we have formulated our own definition of religious persecution.
|
Religious persecution is the persecution of individuals within a group in
the struggle to maintain their religious identity, or the abuse of power
by an individual or organization that causes members of a religious group
to suffer.
|
Religious persecution is a much more complex and controversial topic
than we had imagined. This website that we are presenting to you is
completely different
from what we had in mind when we first started. Within this site, we will explore the
complexity of religious persecution based on our new definition through in-depth studies
of three cases: the Holocaust, China in
Tibet, and
the Sikhs versus the Indian government. We hope you will join us on our
journey to educate each other about these complex issues of religious persecution.
Our online learning community provides tools to
connect learners and educators from around the world and allows them to share their knowledge
of religious conflicts. Please register to become a member and
actively participate to learn more about religious conflicts. We welcome contributions to the
growth of this site. Please contribute by submitting documents, participating in our
forum, and providing us with resources for building an annotated
