The Holocaust has left a deep scar on human history. It demonstrated how people
could be deprived of their most fundamental rights. Therefore, in 1948, the United Nations established the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document has served to provide a clear and uniform
definition of fundamental human rights. In 1948 when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed, the
United Nations had 25 state members. Any state that wishes to become a member to the United Nations must agree
to follow the principals of this Declaration. One hundred and eighty-five countries have now joined the UN, and
by so doing have agreed to the principles of the Declaration.
