In 1880, His Majesty King Chulachomklao
assigned his brother Prince Bhanurangsiswangwong to establish the first postal
service to keep abreast of the rapid progress of neighboring nations'
communications. He took position as the first Director-General of the Post and
Telegraph Department. Like most other postal services, to improve the management
of the respective departments, the postal service and the telegraph service were
split up into independent departments.
Cool
Facts!
The Thai postal system is very typical
of a local Asian postal system, with modernized postal services ranging from
Express Mail, Money Order Services and Fine payments. One interesting
cost-saving scheme I noted for customers would be the "Economy Air"
service. Instead of flying the mail directly to its destination by air, the mail
is flown by air for half of its journey and transported overland to its final
destination.

The Thai postal code system is roughly
as follows: A Thai postal code has 5 digits. The first two digits correspond to
the city's code and the last three digits correspond to the district's 3 digit
code. The northern city of Chiang Rai has the 2-digit code 57 and one of its
districts Mae Chan has a triple-code of 110 so the overall code is 57110.
