1. How does your postal system co-operate with Austrian
Airlines/Lauda Air to transport
airmail in and out of the country?
"Depending on what we aim for in a certain case, we choose an airline to
work with. The choice is based on fixed criterions. We cooperate with Austrian
Airlines and Lauda Air as well as with many
other big international airlines."
2. How does your postal system ensure security amongst the mail? What kind of
security devices are used?
"We operate with international customary security standards. We do have
general terms of business for the transport of hazardous freight. This terms of
business are very restrictive and we only transport slight hazardous freight
like for example blood samples. The terms of business include strict
rules regarding quantity or the packaging a.s.o."
3. Do you feel that the postal service in Austria should be a monopoly ? Why?
"As Austria is a member state of the European community the postal
system is strongly connected with the system of the European Union. Every member
state is obligated to provide a universal service, offering regular postal
services throughout the territory of a given quality, at acceptable prices, for
all users. In Austria, such universal service is provided by Österreichische
Post AG.
With the Council Directive on the postal sector, the European Union has set the
overall conditions for the liberalization. The Council directive provides for a
step-by-step liberalization. A monopoly sector of a limited extent exists
for universal service operators. Reserved activities are: Letters up to 350 g
(Direct Mail and International Items included). A discussion is presently
commencing within the European Union with respect to further liberalization
steps in the postal sector."
