Portugal

Time Traveler

The first Portuguese postal system was inaugurated in 1520 by King Manuel I. This opening of Portugal's first mail system was followed by numerous mail agreements with neighboring European states such as its immediate neighbor Spain, as well as France to the north. Portugal operated a regular mail service from its national capital Lisbon to the first non-European country, Brazil. It was in the 20th century that the introduction of the Portuguese postal code occurred as well as the public listing of CTT (Posts and Telecommunications of Portugal).

Technology

Portugal is one of the many European countries that features Telepost. It is an unique way of sending mail via an online system where one does not need to fumble with stamps or envelopes. Letters can be written online and sent to the central Telepost office, where it is fast-printed, enveloped, and shuttled to its destination. It is intended that the Portuguese Telepost system is going to link up with more countries' Telepost systems so that mail can be sent via Telepost to even more countries around the world.
