Time Traveler
The Persian postal history must have been one of the richest as the
Persians were the first few who established a postal system. Evidence came from
the extensive road network all over the Persian Empire. King Cyrus the Great (6
BC) set up a postal service which linked many major key points of his empire,
namely Babylon, Aden, Indian Oceanic states etc.
By the 19th century, the French had been called in to help design a modern
postal system for the Iranians, to improve the model they had then in Tehran,
the Iranian capital. French artists were sent down from Paris to design
exquisite stamps for the new system, chiefly about majestic Islamic symbols such
as lions and suns.
Cool Facts!
One interesting aspect of efficiency the Iranians had, was that relay
stations were set up a large distance from one another to discourage the horses
from wasting time resting or idling.
Many Iranian
stamps feature Islamic symbols such as the lion and sun. The lion represents
power while the rising sun symbolizes purity, goodness and even God. Look at the
older Iranian stamps and observe that every element in it has a religious
significance. |
