Finland
Time Traveler
Finnish postal history was chiefly impacted by its domineering neighbor
Russia. Russia was wild about introducing a wave of "Russification"
(i.e. converting everything into Russian) into its immediate neighbor nations.
The first instance of Russification in Finland was when the independence of the
Finnish postal system was absorbed by the Russian Interior Ministry. Over the
next 10 years, the Russians imposed strict restrictions on the usage of Finnish
postage on domestic mail and international mail in their aim to introduce the
Russian postage system.
World War I came as a blessing in
disguise to the Finns as it sparked off the notorious Russian Revolutions of
1917. This eventually led to the fall of Russian dominance in Finland, and the
Finnish postal system regained independence.
