Airlines were extremely important in developing the airmail industry as the major airmail routes around the world depended greatly on the routes the airlines flew. The system of contract air-mail was introduced in which airlines helped deliver mail on a scheduled basis once they were awarded the contract and rights by the respective postal authority.
