Fun

The Americans often thought that the Dutch didn't had any fun, but the Hollanders thought did. There were many inns in Holland, where the people many times came after church services to enjoy a drink and tobacco. There, they discussed the sermon they heard and the Bible. This mix of fun and church was just the religious sphere that was typical in Holland.

Church explodes

There was a church built in 1848, but it soon became too small. A new one was needed. They build a new church....Finally in 1856 there was a new church, which was more in the center of Holland. The church was the site of many community activities. There were meetings of women's associations, activities for the youth, and classrooms for Sunday school.

Language

The immigrants thought that language was very important because otherwise they wouldn't be able to read the Bible and speak with the Americans. Many immigrants learned 4 languages: Dutch, English, French and German.
