[Van Raalte] had chosen [Michigan] as the land of his adoption because here he could enjoy perfect religious freedom. There were great trials and privations to be endured, but in the darkest hour he seemed to see with prophetic eye the future success of his labors. I have heard him say when we were passing through the darkest days, "If my head were laid low, the place would still go on. My work can not be in vain, because I have built in faith."
