Baroque Architecture

Baroque is a unifying style. Baroque is unique because it is the first period (seventeenth century) where many different arts are encompassed to adorn each other. It developed throughout Europe, but especially France and England. The United States also experienced a baroque period in architecture.

We cannot definitively name those who worked with architecture during the Baroque period Baroque architects. For, these artists and designers were multitalented and enjoined all aspects of their expertise to create works that blended well with society. Harmony among the arts was sought as the Baroque scientist mixed the elements of architecture, sculpture and painting to concoct new and relative works.

The best example a Baroque architecture is the Versailles Palace in France. Such a massive and beauteous work, it required the expertise of three Baroque designers. From the beautiful gardens, well positioned fountains, and central palace we see that Louis Le Vau, Andre Le Notre, and Jules Hardouin-Mansart collaborated and brought together the best of both landscape architecture and urban planning.

In the European section of Russia, in St. Petersburg lies two other palaces designed by the Baroque artist Bartolommeo Francesco Rastrelli. Both the Winter and the Stroganov Palaces follow the same trends of the Palace at Versailles.
