The great producer of cocoa is Los Ríos with 30%, follow it Guayas with 22% and Manabí with 20%, the others has minimal humilities.
The production goes in constant descent. One of the old problems are the decrease of the productivity that for 1997 was from 0,26 metric tons for hectare, in 1998 was from approximately 80.000 and for the 2000 are calculated in 130.000 tons.

The low production of grain during 1998 is due between other things to the phenomenon of El Niño, for the one which the production for that year is of hardly 18 million dollar, overcome thoroughly for the four first months of 1999.
Exists a monopoly control of the exports of cocoa. The 5 high control more than the 90% of the total of these.
The exports of cocoa produced in 1998 are also extremely low, they scarcely reach the 33 million dollar, when they in 1997 were of 72 million.
