The sun was known as "Yhi" and the Moon was "Bahloo" to the Aboriginals from areas of New South Wales. They told of the love and marriage plans that Yhi had for Bahloo. They told of the refusal of marriage by Bahloo, as he believed that Yhi had had too many previous lovers for him. Yhi was very angry and his scorn turned her love into hate. With this hate and the help of spirits to keep guard Yhi keeps Bahloo in the sky. Bahloo has one trick, in forming the shape of Gowa-gay the sky emu he can slip past every 28 days. The Southern Victorian Aboriginals believe near the sun sits Moo-to-Ong the creator and he spins the sun on his finger. To explain why there is night and day the Northern Australian Aboriginals tell the following tale. 
From the stringy bark tree came the material for a blazing torch which gives us light and heat. This travels from east to west across the sky held by the Sun Woman who is known as Wuriunpranili.
Wuriunpranili stirs each morning to light a small fire and in the dawn she decorates her face. The red ochre powder used to enhance her beauty often rises into the air and red sunrises result as clouds are covered by the powder.
The earthly people are woken by the musical birds as Wuriunpranili completes her make up.
The material from the stringy bark tree is lit from the small fire and Wuriunpranili begins the long journey to her western campsite. The earthly people and animals can see to hunt and collect their food from the bright light that travels across the sky.
Once the campsite is reached Wuriunpranili disappears over the horizon and less light and heat comes from the torch she smothers. The red sunsets like the sunrise come again from the red ochre Wuriunpranili uses for decoration.
To return to the morning camp Wuriunpranili travels through an underground tunnel and all is dark. Again she stirs from her sleep and the birds can start their song as the morning light is lit.
