In this section we have chosen some pieces which were written for the purpose of introducing the orchestra, or can be used to that effect. Some have ‘built-in’ narration, but we have prepared notes to go along with the music all the same.

Each piece is also accompanied by a brief synopsis with some background information, as well as recommended recordings by various artists.

Selected Pieces:

>Britten, Benjamin: Young Persons’ Guide to the Orchestra -
Variations and Fugue on a theme by Purcell Op. 34

>Prokofiev, Sergei: Peter and the Wolf

>Saint-Saëns, Camille: Carnival of the Animals
