The Airforce And The Changing World
We, humans, an organism without wings have never thought of flying in the skies like birds. Years past, technology advanced, help the help of machines a feeble human being can now dominate the skies, even with greater power than any eagle or vulture. The Wright Brothers had successfully brought us up to the skies, enabling to see the world in a different perspective. It is obvious that the first motive of the research in flying is not entirely for military use as most people at that time still doubt the ability of an airplane and its real purpose in the army.
The invention of the aircraft had changed the world and the advancement in military aircraft had definitely shaped our world's history. Many historical events will never happen without the mighty giants of the skies, the fighter jets and bombers. Its first mark was probably made during the First World War. During that period, many airplanes were used for reconnaissance. There were also balloons in service used for spying. They were used to spot enemies' base and artilleries. It was at that time that the people soon realised the importance in dominating the skies during a war. After that, most countries started to research on better aircrafts each with their specialised function. By World War Two, air warfare came into the picture. It was clear that airplanes can play an important role in modern warfare. The revolution of the American air force also came at around the same time. During the first World War, the American air force was pathetic and they most of the planes used during the war were European made. Not surprisingly, the American Air Forces (it was called the AAF at that time) had become the world's most powerful air force, even the British Royal Air Force (RAF) were no match to it. There were planes sent overseas to help to fight against the Germans and the Japanese. The two leading air forces, RAF and AAF had made history by freeing the world from the Germans and Japanese at that time. The joint forces made bombing attacks on Germany, which showed its effect by crippling the country's economy. In other parts of Europe, airplanes were used in conjunction with some ground forces. With air supremacy, the allied forces swept through enemy forces with ease. In Asia, the war against the Japanese was fought using a strategy known as "Island-Hopping". Without aircrafts, this can never be achieved. Using large bombers and some jets were used to regain lost territories in the Pacific region, after liberating some lost land, and using these land as their new bases, attacking mainland Japan through aerial attacks became much easier. The historical event which shocked the world, the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was carried out by AAF's strategic B-29 bombers. The world had been arguing if the dropping of the bombs were necessary but nevertheless, it had coerced the Japanese to surrender. The B-29 bombers had probably killed many innocent individuals but it had definitely saved even more who were suffering under the threatening claws of the Japanese. Looking at it at either perspective, the air force had wrote history and changed the years ahead.
