Fluorescence

Materials that fluoresce give off light after absorbing energy. Ultraviolet light is used to identify minerals and gemstones that fluoresce. Ultraviolet light is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum having a wavelength smaller than visible light. When ultraviolet light shines on certain materials, such as the minerals in the rock shown here, the materials fluoresce with different characteristic wavelengths of light.
