A
Antibiotic a medicine or chemical that can destroy harmful bacteria in the body or limit their growth.
Anaerobic not needing or without oxygen.
Allergy the condition of reacting badly to something, such as milk, the fur of particular animals or dust, causing someone who eats it, touches it or breathes it in to feel uncomfortable although it is harmless to most people.

Bacteria very small organisms that live in air, earth, water, plants and animals, and are the cause of some diseases.
C
Chemotherapy the treatment of diseases using chemicals.
Colony a group of animals, insects or plants of the same type that live together.

Gonorrhea a disease which causes pain in the sexual organs and which can be given from one person to another during sex.
H
Hive a condition in which a person's skin develops sore, usually red, areas esp. because they have eaten a type of food that harms them slightly.
Hypersensitive extremely influenced, changed or damaged by physical conditions.

Meningitis a disease caused by infection in which the outer part of the brain becomes damaged.
Mold a soft green or grey growth which develops on old food or on objects that have been left for too long in warm weather.

Penicillin a type of medicine which kills bacteria, a type of antibiotic.
Pneumonia a serious illness in which one or both lungs become red and swollen and filled with liquid.

Species a set of animals or plants, members of which have similar characteristics to each other and which can breed with each other.
Streptococcal a bacterial infection of the throat.
Streptococcus a bacterium, many types of which cause disease.
Synthetic made from artificial substances, often copying a natural product.
Syphilis a veneral disease, caught during sexual activity with an infected person.
Swell to become larger or rounder than usual, to cause to increase in size or amount.

Tract a system of connected tubes and organs in the body of a person or an animal, which has a particular purpose.
Typhoid an infectious disease spread by dirty water and food, causing a high body temperature, red spots on the upper body, severe pains in the bowels and sometimes death.
