In the Australian
aboriginal culture a person sometimes goes on a "walk about."
They wander for years before returning to take their place at home. This
is a time of self discovery and learning. You can go on your own walk about the
world before you continue on with your life.
Before you know it, summer will be over and classes are going to be starting
up again. Will you be going off to school with the rest of your friends or doing
something different? Imagine yourself walking along in England or Paris, seeing
where history was made, exploring Africa and seeing places you've only read
about in textbooks. If traveling for a year is of interest to you, you should
carefully consider your reasons for choosing this option. This additional time
may help you focus on what you want to do for a career as well as give you a
greater understanding for what other parts of the world are like. If you think a
year abroad is for you and you intend to follow that up with college, then
before you go check with the schools you are interested in attending to see
which ones will accept travel and life experience for credit.
Travel Insurance - If you're planning
on traveling abroad to study you need to make sure you have adequate health insurance
coverage in case of unforeseen illness or accidents. The last thing you
want is to be sick in a foreign country without coverage.
Study Abroad - Many majors offer specialized study abroad programs.
Studying abroad is a great experience and can increase the value of your résumé tremendously. You can
learn or perfect a foreign language and discover new cultures while continuing
your education.
