What to Bring?
Certain items are permitted at the test center, and certain items are prohibited. What should you bring? The following are "Musts":
- Pencils
- Identification
- Watch
- Calculator
Bring Enough Pencils
Although the test site will probably provide pencils, bring your own. Make sure they're "number 2," sharpened, with good, clean erasers.
A half-dozen should be enough, in case you break a few points, or have to lend one to a friend who forgot to bring any.
Valid Identification
Any standard ID with your name and photograph will do, as long as the photo is fairly recent and looks like you. For example, a driver's license, a student ID, or a passport will do. You must have such an ID to get into the test center.
If not, you'll be faced with the dilemma of trying to prove you are who you are, which is not something you want to worry about on the day of the SAT.
Wearing a Watch
You'll probably have a clock in the testing room, but you may not be able to see it easily. Instead, bring your own watch — a digital is best — so that you can set it for 30 minutes when taking each section. That way everything you need — test booklet, answer sheet, pencils, and watch — are within the confines of your desk.
If you have a watch that beeps, turn the sound off, since proctors will confiscate any watches that cause a disturbance.
Using a Calculator
The SAT allows the use of a calculator. Bring one you're comfortable with, and make sure it has new batteries.
You may use it only occasionally or not at all, but since it's allowed, bring one just in case. The next section has tips on using a calculator.
Good News and Bad News
There is both good news and bad news about using a calculator on the SAT.
The bad news is that many questions on the SAT are designed so that you can't solve the problem just by using your calculator.
The good news is that if you have a calculator, you don't have to waste time doing long and tedious arithmetic. The following pages have tips on using the calculator to your advantage.
