You must plan for the unexpected when you plan to come to U.S. Medical coverage is a must because no matter how much preparation you do you can never guarantee that you won't get sick. Arranging for and paying for medical care is your responsibility in the U.S. There is no national health care system.

Medical care in the U.S. is very good but can often be very expensive. The best way to pay for it is by having  health insurance to cover you from unexpected costs.

Many colleges and universities have their own health insurance plans that are usually mandatory for their students. But if the school you choose does not provide a health insurance plan you must try to find an insurance company on your own. Your international student office will often be able to help with this and provide you with  brochures from several insurance companies that offer health insurance to international students.

Your international student office will also be able to provide you with information on where to get health care, what to do if you are sick, and other health related concerns.
