One of the most important tasks of a counselor is to keep the doors of communication open between yourself and your students and the student's parents. A good way to do this is to create a career center in your school that provides students with open access to information that will be useful to them. When they come into the career center you will be able to share advice, information, and options with them.

A career center doesn't have to be an elaborate library of information. It can simply be a shelf of books in your office and a computer. The computer is especially important because you can let students use it to do scholarship and college information searches.

Career Binder

Keeping an up-to-date career binder (or set of binders) will be a great service to your students. You can get basic information on over 250 careers off of our career search page. You can gradually add information to this as you find articles in the local paper or magazines, etc.

Financial Aid Information

There are billions of dollars of financial aid available out there but your students need access to the information to apply to them. The local library is usually pitifully out of date when it comes to getting current information. The best solution to getting financial aid information out there is to hook your students up to an internet service such as: www.fastweb.com. Sites like FastWeb give students instant and personalized information on what financial aid is available to them with a minimum of effort on your part.
