In today's labor market credentials are often essential in finding and keeping a good job. The credentials of an education or previous training are very important. Employers will evaluate your credentials to ensure you possess the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities for a job or career. Besides a degree, other credentials you can have are certification, licensing, and past experience.

Certification
A certification is issued by an organization and provides confirmation that you are qualified in a specified occupation. Certification means that you possesses a specific knowledge or skill level in an occupation.

Types of Certification
Occupational certification can be broadly grouped into two areas: certifications granted by organizations or professional associations, and industry or product-related certifications.

Certification Requirements
All certifying organizations set their own standards for certification.  You must meet this standard set of requirements in order to receive the certification. A certification requirement could be anything from education, training, and work experience, to passing an examination.

Licensure
Licensing is the most restrictive form of professional and occupational regulation. It is almost a right-to-practice a particular occupation. In some states it is illegal to practice a profession without first meeting State standards and getting licensed.
