Use of Fire
Man utilized fire for a great variety of reasons including to clear forest for agriculture, to improve grazing land for domestic animals, to drive away predatory animals, ticks, and other pests. Given this remarkable utility it would be surprising if it had not been much used. Indeed it is still much used, especially by pastoralists and by the practitioners of shifting agriculture. Land which was burned over too frequently became overgrown with perennial grasses, which tended to make it useless for agricultural exploitation with primitive tools.
